The official drink of the Kentucky Derby with a Northern flair, this cocktail is cool and refreshing - to be enjoyed any time of year.
Prep time: 5 minutes | Makes 1 cocktail
12 fresh mint leaves
1/2 oz maple syrup (a darker grade will release more flavor)
2 - 2 1/2 oz Kentucky bourbon (Woodford Reserve is the official bourbon of the Kentucky Derby, but any high proof will do to keep the drink from diluting too quickly)
1 or 2 mint sprigs to garnish
In a chilled Julep cup or rocks glass, add mint leaves and maple syrup and muddle lightly.
Add bourbon and pour between two cups a few times to mix the liquids well before returning to Julep cup.
Pack crushed ice into Julep cup and stir until the outside of the cup is frosted. Top with more ice to form a dome, and garnish with mint.
Add a straw and enjoy.
